물질명사 (Material nouns)

<물질명사의 특징>

 

▶ 일정한 형태가 없는 물질을 나타내는 명사로, 셀 수 없는 불가산명사이므로, 단수를 나타내는 부정관사(a/an)를 붙이지 않고, 복수 표현도 불가하다. 

(a name of various raw materials or elements which exist in nature or the environment)

 

<물질명사의 종류>

자연의 물질 (materials from nature)

air(공기), coal(석탄), diamond(다이아몬드) gold(금), rock(바위), rain(비) sand(모래), salt(소금), water(물) 등

I need some water for the bread. (빵을 만드는데 물이 좀 필요하다.) Diamond is the hardest substance known. (다이아몬드는 알려진 가장 단단한 물질이다.) The gold is a precious metal. (금은 귀중한 금속이다.)

식물의 물질 (material for plants)

cotton(면), coffee(커피), oil(기름) rubber(고무), tea(차) 등

I had a cup of coffee yesterday. (나는 어제 커피 한 잔을 마셨다.) Tires are made of rubber. (타이어는 고무로 만들어진다.) She has to buy a cotton blouse. (그녀는 면 블라우스를 사야 한다.

동물의 물질 (material from animals)

egg(달걀), honey(꿀), silk(비단) leather(가죽), meat(고기), milk(우유) 등

This is a boiled egg. (이것은 삶은 계란이다.) Honey is a very healthy food. (꿀은 아주 건강에 좋은 식품이다.) I drink a glass of milk every morning. (나는 매일 아침 우유 한 잔을 마신다.)

인간이 만든 물질 (human-made material)

acid(산), alcohol(알코올, 술), brick(벽돌) cement(시멘트), cheese(치즈) cloth(옷감, 천), glass(유리), plastic(플라스틱) stainless steel(스테인레스강) 등

This drink doesn’t contain any alcohol. (이 음료는 알코올이 들어 있지 않다.) This bottle is made of plastic. (이 병은 플라스틱으로 만들어진다.) Cheese is one of my favorite foods. (치즈는 내가 좋아하는 음식 중 하나이다.)
